Body Surgery

As we age, it can become more difficult to keep our bodies looking the way we want them to, even with diet and exercise. WellSpan Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers a full range of body contouring procedures that, along with healthy habits, can help you reach your goal of looking great.

WellSpan Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery also partners closely with WellSpan Bariatric Surgery to optimize the health of our patients and ensure that patients can safely and effectively move on to the next chapter of their weight-loss journey.

Following weight loss, surgical removal of excess skin can aid in body functioning and can be an emotionally-impactful procedure.

Arm Lift

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that:

  • Reduces excess sagging skin that droops downward
  • Tightens and smoothes the underlying supportive tissue that defines the shape of the upper arm
  • Reduces localized pockets of fat in the upper arm region

Fluctuations in weight, growing older and heredity can cause your upper arms to have a drooping, sagging appearance. This is a condition that cannot be corrected through exercise.

Arm lift surgery may be right for you if the underside of your upper arms are sagging or appear loose and full due to excess skin and fat.

Body Contouring

The body you were born with may or may not have the musculature or curves you desire. It may be difficult to improve upon certain areas with exercise alone, and in some cases, damage from an accident or certain health conditions may affect your appearance.

Augmentation with implants uses soft, solid silicone implants for an immediate and uniform increase in buttock, calf or chest volume. Unlike fat transfers, where survival of transferred fat varies and may require touchups, implants maintain their volume and don’t need follow up adjustments.

Body contouring with implants is designed to change your contours, enhancing your appearance and self-confidence.

Calf

Damage from an accident or certain health conditions may make the size of your calves unequal. The calves can be augmented by implants or body fat transfers depending on the changes you desire and your available body fat.

Calf augmentation, or calfplasty, changes the contours of the lower leg.

Chest

The chest can be augmented by implants alone or in conjunction with body fat transfers depending on the changes you desire and your available body fat. Chest implants are designed to change the contours of the chest.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. A defect in the ear structure that is present at birth or that becomes apparent with development can be corrected by otoplasty. This procedure can also treat misshapen ears caused by injury.

Otoplasty creates a more natural shape while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to appearance and self-esteem. If protruding or disfigured ears bother you or your child, you may consider plastic surgery.

Fat Transfer/Grafting

For those who would like to decrease unwanted fat in specific body areas while restoring or adding volume to other areas of the body, a fat transfer can improve body contours and revitalize overall appearance.

The fat transfer procedure removes fat from certain areas of the body using liposuction, the process of transferring fat into a targeted location.

Gential Reconstruction (Labiaplasty)

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the labia minora. The labia minora lay inside the labia majora and along either side of the vaginal opening.

Childbirth, massive weight loss, aging, or genetics can cause the labia minora to become enlarged, stretched,  symmetrical, darkened, or a combination of these characteristics. This can lead to physical discomfort during intercourse, exercise, or while wearing certain types of clothing, as well as self-consciousness regarding the appearance of the labia minora.

Liposuction

Do you have pockets of unwanted fatty tissue that just won’t go away? You eat well and exercise regularly, but those bulges are persistent.

Are you considering liposuction? Almost any area of your body can be contoured with liposuction – thighs, hips, buttocks,
lower legs, back, abdomen, chest, upper arms, neck, jaw line and cheeks - creating a slimmer, shapelier appearance.

The procedures may vary for specific body areas, but the general processes are similar.

Mommy Make-over

Many women experience significant physical changes following pregnancy and breast-feeding, many of which can be persistent and difficult to correct with diet and exercise alone.

Changes to the volume and shape of the breasts, stretch marks and sagging of the abdominal skin, as well as fat accumulation on the hips, thighs, and love handles are all common results of pregnancy and nursing.

A mommy makeover offers women who are dissatisfied with these changes, the opportunity to restore their pre-pregnancy appearances. A mommy makeover refers to a combination of plastic surgery procedures that are chosen by you and your surgeon in order to address the changes to your postpregnancy body.

The most commonly performed procedures during a mommy makeover include breast augmentation, breast lift with or without implants, breast reduction, full or mini tummy tuck, and liposuction. However, there are many additional treatments such as thigh lift or cosmetic injections that can be performed during a mommy makeover, depending upon your specific concerns.

Post-Bariatric Skin Removal (Panniculectomy)

The goal of panniculectomy surgery is to remove hanging skin and fat from the lower abdomen to create a smoother abdominal contour. A panniculectomy differs from a tummy tuck in that the abdominal muscles are typically not tightened during a panniculectomy.

Although the results of a panniculectomy are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss would be advised to postpone a panniculectomy.

A panniculectomy cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised.

Thigh Lift

Thigh lift surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin and fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body.

If fitness and weight control efforts have not achieved your goals for a body that is firmer, more youthful-looking and more proportionate to your overall body image, a surgical lift may be right for you.

Tummy Tuck

Often, factors such as multiple pregnancies, substantial weight gain or loss and inherited traits can contribute
to loose, sagging skin, fat deposits, and stretch marks in the abdominal region.

These conditions may persist despite proper diet and exercise, and can make the abdomen appear disproportionate with the rest of the body. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can restore the appearance of a firmer, flatter abdomen.
